Sean Smith could be a great pickup for the Steelers and they wouldn’t necessarily need to break the bank to sign him. There will be a great deal amount of expectations on Senquez Golson to return from his injured rookie season to fill slot duties but the cornerback position still isn’t without its needs.

The word on the street is that the Steelers are looking to re-sign William Gay, and with good reason. But Smith can be an impact starter and shore up the secondary that allowed more than 4,500 passing yards last season.

Last season for the Chiefs Smith had 45 tackles and two interceptions. In his seven seasons in the NFL he’s totaled 353 tackles, 10 interceptions and 3 forced fumbles. Smith’s last contract was a three-year, $16.5 million deal that seems realistic for the Steelers to be able to offer, depending on the market for him.

We all know the Steelers won’t get into a bidding war for a player so this is the type of a signing that they’d need to get done the earlier the better.

The lineup of Sean Smith, William Gay and Senquez Golson sounds a lot better than Cortez Allen, Gay and Antwon Blake, now doesn’t it?
