The Steelers have made a roster signing ahead of the free agency negotiation period, slated to begin later this week.

The team announced on Monday morning that they have come to terms with safety Robert Golden on a three-year deal. The financial terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed.

Golden joined the Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2012 out of Arizona. He’s contributed mainly on special teams but made his first career starts this past season due to an injury of Will Allen that sidelined him for three games.

Golden has been named a special teams captain for the past two consecutive years.

The signing, in my opinion, is a safe one considering the team is likely leaning away from re-signing Will Allen, who will be 34 before training camp opens. Whether or not Golden can be the starting strong safety opposite Mike Mitchell, however is a different story.

The stunted growth of safety Shamarko Thomas creates a need at the strong safety position. Thomas was drafted in 2013 for all intents and purposes to be the next Troy Polamalu but after injuries plagued his first couple of seasons he barely saw the field when healthy in 2015.

It may be time for the Steelers to move on from Thomas and re-signing Golden provides the safety (no pun intended) to look for that strong safety either in the draft or elsewhere in free agency.

The Steelers likely won’t be making any sexy moves in free agency, but this one is a good one.
