Steelers add linebacker depth with Steven Johnson
By Kim Myers
If you thought the Steelers were done with free agent signings you’d be wrong.
The Steelers announced on Friday afternoon that they have come to terms on a one-year deal with linebacker Steven Johnson. Johnson spent the 2015 season with the Tennessee Titans.
Johnson was originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of Kansas by the Denver Broncos. He spent three seasons with the Broncos before joining the Titans last season. He played all 16 games for Tennessee last season and recorded seven tackles.
The move was necessary for depth after linebackers Terrence Garvin and Sean Spence signed elsewhere in free agency. Johnson joins Vince Williams, Lawrence Timmons and Ryan Shazier under Jerry Olsavsky’s tutelage.
The Steelers could still use some more depth at the position which leads to thinking that they’re probably not done with free agent signings. The draft is less than a month away but they can still add some free agents with some contract restructures.
There’s been no developments about cornerback Cortez Allen’s contract situation since he was asked to reduce his contract amount earlier this month.
The Steelers are still thin on the defensive line and will most likely have a defense-heavy draft.
What do you think of the signing of Steven Johnson to the Steelers?
