Steelers Pre-Camp Projected Depth Chart
By Kim Myers
Fullback:
Starter: Roosevelt Nix
Backup: David Johnson
The Steelers are one of the few teams left in the league who use a fullback, although both Nix and Johnson both factor into other areas of the offense like running back and tight end.
Nix was signed by the Steelers last January and over the course of the 2015 season made his name known on special teams and was rewarded with a one-year contract extension for the 2016 season.
David Johnson is in his second stint with the Steelers as he was drafted by Pittsburgh in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft out of Arkansas State. He left in 2014 to sign with the San Diego Chargers in free agency but signed a one-year deal this past May with the Steelers.
His primary role will be tight end but mostly a blocking tight end and he’ll also function as a fullback. These are not glamorous positions on an otherwise flashy offense but definitely necessary to the whole operation.
