Cornerbacks:

Starters: William Gay, Ross Cockrell

Backups Senquez Golson, Artie Burns

The Steelers made Artie Burns their first cornerback drafted in the first round since 1997 this spring. The secondary gets the benefit of Golson getting to re-do his rookie season but with all the knowledge gained from attending camp and meetings last year.

Golson never played a down his rookie year after showing up to camp with a torn labrum. Tomlin has already explained that he doesn’t expect rookie play from Golson in spite of his inexperience on the field.

Burns looks to quiet the critics that thought the Steelers made a mistake in making him the 25th overall pick out of the University of Miami. While the Steelers will play a lot of nickel defense that should give either one of these young guys plenty of opportunity on the field when all Burns has to do is outplay Ross Cockrell for a starting position.

No disrespect to Cockrell, who signed with the Steelers just prior to the start of last season and got significant playing time right off the bat. I expect he will retain the starting position but this will change as the season goes.

The Steelers defense did see an overall improvement last year with regards to points allowed but they gave up a ton of yards. They ranked 11th overall in points allowed but 21st in yards allowed. Because of that the secondary will continue to be highly scrutinized for the unforeseeable future.
