Safety:

Starters: Mike Mitchell, Sean Davis

Backups: Robert Golden, Shamarko Thomas

The safety position is not without its intrigue going into the 2016 season. The Steelers have not re-signed veteran Will Allen meaning the strong safety position is open for Shamarko Thomas to either finally take that step to make his own or lose it forever.

Many predicted the Steelers’ second-round draft pick out of Maryland this year, Sean Davis, to be the rookie capable and positioned to make the most immediate impact. I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to see Davis take the starting role in camp as opposed to working up to it through the season.

It’s been a disappointment to see Shamarko Thomas never play up to the expectations he came in with as a fourth-round pick out of Syracuse in 2013. He registered just 12 tackles last season after being the expected starter since Troy Polamalu’s retirement.

Thomas has had either injury issues or just lack of quality play that has stunted his growth on the team. This will be a make-or-break season for him indeed as Davis looks to have the qualities to jump into a starting role right away.
