Tight Ends:

Starters: Ladarius Green, Jesse James

Backups: David Johnson, Xavier Grimble

The Steelers’ tight end group looks decidedly different this year than it has in a long time without Heath Miller or Matt Spaeth. Miller retired in February after spending his entire 11-season career with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Just prior to the opening of training camp the Steelers announced they released veteran tight end Matt Spaeth citing a failed physical.

The Steelers had signed free agent tight end Ladarius Green formerly of the San Diego Chargers this offseason but an ankle injury has sidelined him during the offseason workout program. He may not go right away at camp but should be healthy in time for the start of the season.

Steelers fan favorite Jesse James got a huge boost on the depth chart with the release of Spaeth. The second-year former Penn State standout figures to have a more prominent role in the Steelers offense without the veterans ahead of him.

The Steelers also have rookie free agents Xavier Grimble and Mandel Dixon and they re-signed David Johnson who plays a hybrid fullback/tight end position.
