The Pittsburgh Steelers and head coach Mike Tomlin have agreed to terms on a contract extension.

According to ESPN’s Jeremy Folwer, the Steelers have extended Tomlin’s contract through 2020. His previous deal was set to expire in 2018.

Pittsburgh isn’t usually the team to hand out coaching extensions prior to a coach’s contract year. But with Tomlin having the third best record in the NFL over the last 10 seasons, the team decided it was time to make the move a little early.

With T.J. Watt, JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Conner headlining Tomlin’s 2017 rookie class, there looks to be no sign of the Steelers slowing down any time soon. Even though Le’Veon Bell and the team failed to agree on a deal prior to the franchise tag deadline, the team has executed everything perfectly this offseason.

Tomlin, who is already a Super Bowl winning head coach, is looking to lead this team to the promise land once again this season. With threats of Ben Roethlisberger’s retirement becoming more serious, it looks like 2017 is the perfect time to start a new deal out with a bang.

The last time Pittsburgh signed Tomlin to a contract extension was in 2015. Two days later, general manager, Kevin Colbert, was given an extension as well. With the preseason right around the corner, and the Steelers already making this the second signing of training camp (first being Alejandro Villanueva), there could be a new deal for Colbert coming soon.
