Pittsburgh Steelers activate Toussaint, release Watson

The Pittsburgh Steelers have made roster moves after losing JuJu Smith-Schuster for game against Green Bay.

With a lingering hamstring injury, Steelers rookie sensation, JuJu Smith-Schuster, will not play Sunday night against the Packers. So, Pittsburgh has made roster moves to adjust to the time spent without their newest receiver.

Smith-Schuster and Terrell Watson were the go-to men in kick returns this season, but with Smith-Schuster out in Week 12, the team decided to enhance their special teams play. According to the team, they have activated Fitzgerald Toussaint to the 53-man roster and have released Terrell Watson.

This comes as little surprise considering Toussaint is known to be a decent punt and kick returner, where Watson was relied more on just the kick return than anything.

Whether this move is just temporarily or for the remainder of the season is still unknown. Watson wasn’t having an explosive year, but was certainly doing enough to help this team get to 8-2 on the season.

No one knows how long Smith-Schuster will miss with the injury. Depending on Toussaint’s performance during his absence, this special teams change could be permanent moving forward. With his experience in the return game, the Steelers may just be thinking of taking a safer route heading into the bottom half of the regular season.

There’s no timetable on this move, but for right now, Pittsburgh should be happy with either man returning kicks. With explosiveness from both, this could be a move to amp up special teams play and try to find a big play or two moving forward.
