The running back position is loaded in the draft.

The past few years have seen running back lose a lot of value in the draft. Many teams have found very good backs later in the draft. NFL rushing title winner Kareem Hunt was picked in the third round of last years draft, less than twenty picks before the Steelers selected Conner. Many of the best young backs in the league were selected outside the first round.

Bell, and Hunt are both good examples. They are joined by Jordan Howard, and Tarik Cohen in Chicago, and Hunt’s teammate Kansas City Spencer Ware. Other good examples include David Johnson in Arizona, Atlanta’s Devonta Freeman, and the Vikings’ Latavius Murray. Not only is it possible to find star backs later in the draft, but this years’ class is loaded.

Saquon Barkley is considered by many experts not only the best back, but the best player in this years draft. While it’s almost a guarantee Barkley doesn’t fall out of the top ten he is just the tip of the iceberg in a very deep class.

Derrius Guice from LSU is one guy who could be an absolute beast at the next level. Bucky Brooks took him for the Steelers in a live mock draft with Daniell Jeremiah, and I would be ecstatic if that came to fruition.

This class is deep enough that the team could still find a star outside the first round. Sony Michel, Kerryon Johnson, Ronald Jones II, and Nick Chubb are all potential stars, and I believe this draft has fifteen or more possible starters throughout. With this much talent the Steelers can find a great replacement, the team just has to identify which guy they want.
