The belief is the Pittsburgh Steelers are looking for a tight end in the 2018 NFL Draft. But do they really need one?

Based on the Steelers pre-draft interviews it appears that the team is considering making its third move to replace Heath Miller in three years. Pittsburgh made a rare free agent signing when they inked Ladarius Green to a four year twenty million dollar contract.

That was in 2016. If the signing had been a success Green would be under contract for two more years. In 2017 the team traded back a round in the upcoming draft to acquire Vance McDonald. A move they must not be completely happy with if they are going beyond due diligence in scouting the tight end position.

The question is whether the tight end position really is a need for the Steelers. The team currently has four tight ends under contract, McDonald, Jesse James, Xavier Grimble, and reserve/futures contract player Jake McGee.

If a tight end is the best player available when the Steelers are on the clock they should pick him. I don’t know, however, if the position should be considered a need for the Steelers. This is a look at the players on the roster, and what the position’s future could look like for Pittsburgh.
