Second-Round

Options

  • Jessie Bates
  • Josey Jewell
  • Shaquem Griffin
  • Ronald Jones
  • Mason Rudolph

Most-likely, Mason Rudolph isn’t around with the 60th pick. But if he is, Pittsburgh takes no time to make him their future successor of Ben Roethlisberger.

We’re going to imagine Rudolph is gone, though, and the Steelers are looking at a running back, inside linebacker or safety.

In this situation, the top three picks will be Jessie Bates, Shaquem Griffin and Josey Jewell. Without any real threat to take these players before No. 60, all three should be available when the Steelers are on the clock for the second time.

A safety would be a great addition to an improving secondary. Bates is a phenomenal second-round option who can sit behind Morgan Burnett in 2018. A promising prospect, a future as a starter is something Bates would bring to Pittsburgh while adding quality depth right now.

Bates should be around in the third round, though. Because of this, Pittsburgh is going to narrow their options down to an inside linebacker.

Shaquem Griffin is one of the hottest names in this year’s class, but without any real scouting from Pittsburgh, it’s hard to say he’s the pick. However, Pittsburgh put as much work into Griffin as they did Jewell, leaving both options wide open for consideration.

Pittsburgh has moved away from their traditional approach of keeping their draft simple and has begun looking for players who are above and beyond others. This draft, no player meets that category more than Griffin, and because of that, he’ll head to Pittsburgh with the 60th pick.
