In the list of legendary Steelers centers, Dermontti Dawson ranks second. Unlike most Pittsburgh greats, Dawson never found his way to a Super Bowl ring. Despite not belonging to one of the six Lombardis, though, the center was known as one of the best at his position.

It took no time for Dawson to make his name known in Pittsburgh. Earning seven-consecutive Pro Bowls following his rookie season, Dawson became a household name throughout the NFL.

Dawson fit perfectly in Pittsburgh, earning the nickname “Dirt” due to his instinct to constantly fight defenders into the ground. In 2012, he found his place in NFL history after being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Not all offensive linemen earn their place with the greats. But when you come from a city that acknowledges talent over anything, it’s easy to find your place. Something Dawson took full advantage of.
