The Pittsburgh Steelers will report to Latrobe at the end of this month and therefore it is a good time to start talking about who will make the team. In this article, we will talk about quarterbacks.

I have the Steelers keeping three quarterbacks in my prediction as that is what they have historically done. I have written that I think they should keep four this year; however, I don’t think the Steelers will do that. These predictions are more about what we think will happen as opposed to what we think should happen.

Ben Roethlisberger

I think it is pretty obvious that Roethlisberger will be one of the quarterbacks kept. He is their franchise quarterback and a future Hall of Famer. I also disagree with David Carr in that I do think Roethlisberger is a top 10 quarterback in this league. He has the rings and that stats to back up the stardom around Roethlisberger. Ben will be the Steelers quarterback for the next three years at least unless something unforeseen happens.

Mason Rudolph

Mason Rudolph was drafted in the third round this year, but some were projecting him to go in the first round. He will be groomed to take over for Roethlisberger once Roethlisberger walks away from the game. We haven’t seen him in the preseason yet, but there is some talk from minicamp that he could win the backup job this year. Either way, he will be kept on the roster because of the potential the Steelers see in him. Remember, Landry Jones was kept on the roster after a poor rookie showing because they believed in his potential.

Landry Jones

The debate with this roster prediction is whether Landry Jones or Josh Dobbs will be kept on the roster. Landry Jones has the experience of coming off the bench and winning for the Steelers. He also has a .500 record and that is good for a backup quarterback. Josh Dobbs brings more potential, but he will have to show that he is a better quarterback than Landry Jones this year to get on the roster. The benefit of keeping Landry Jones is that he is more experienced in the Steelers offense and he is still in his 20s in terms of age. He can be resigned for not a lot of money.

The Steelers’ biggest position battle could very well be for backup quarterback. The three young passers are all looking to remain a part of the future of Pittsburgh and are going to take full advantage of their final opportunity to prove themselves at training camp.
