The time is now for these Pittsburgh Steelers players to rise to the challenge and prove themselves worthy of whatever they may be chasing.

The Pittsburgh Steelers gear up this week for preseason action when the team travels to Philadelphia for their first of four games to be played before the regular season. Preseason football is used for a variety of things, for a variety of reasons. Teams tend to be very vanilla (plain) with schemes and play-calling, and starting players are rarely played.

This leaves opportunity for the coaching staff to toy with depth-charts and see playing time from players in back-up roles. Needless to say, chances for making an NFL team come far and few between, creating a slim environment of competition among a large pool of players.

With the Steelers having one of the most talented rosters in the league, it’s natural for competition within those buried in the depth chart. Yet this isn’t just a piece for those guys fighting to simply make the team. This Pittsburgh team still has a lot of shaping and molding in their identity before the regular season arrives, with much of that depending on who’s in the line-up.

The following players can be found from all walks of life. From those merely trying to make the final 53 man roster, to those watching their starting role slip away from their grasp. Preseason is important for all players to prepare for the regular season, yet even more vital for those with a lot to prove.

Here are five players with an important preseason ahead of them:
