Special Teams needs to be more consistent

The Steelers gave up a few long kick returns on Sunday. Alex Erickson averaged 40.7 yards per return. That’s on kickoff returns. Kickoff returns, thanks to Goodell’s incessant tinkering with the game, are barely even part of NFL football anymore. Yet the Steelers gave up over 122 yards on just 3 kick returns.

On the other hand, Boswell did make both his field goals and both his extra points. And Jordan Berry pulled off a 69 yard boot. Last game the Steelers blocked a kick but also missed an extra point kick of their own. The Steelers special teams unit is by no means hopeless, they’re just all over the place. Inconsistent is better than consistently awful. However, we’ve seen every part of special teams do well and they need to be more consistent at playing that way.
