Situational Football

This is one of those classic Tomlinisms, obviously. He used ‘situational’ three times in a Sunday morning interview with Steelers.com’s Bob Labriola and the focus paid off Sunday. It would not have been clear from any one possession or series that one of these teams was dominating the other. Neither team made big errors. Both teams had some big plays. What decided the game was 3rd down and red zone offense and defense.

As stated earlier, the Steelers were 10/16 on third down and 1/1 on fourth. The Ravens were only 4/12 on third down and 0/1 on fourth. Both teams made it to the red zone 4 times. The Steelers only had to settle for a field goal once, while the Ravens had to settle for a field goal 3 times. Mike Hilton and Terrell Edmunds, of a supposedly awful secondary, made plays that kept 8 points off the board. You play well when it counts the most and you’re going to win games.
