Pittsburgh Steelers 2019 Mock Draft: All defense in opening rounds
Round 7: Daylon Mack, NT, Texas A&M
*Written by Noah Strackbein*
Daylon Mack isn’t the answer to any problems in Pittsburgh, he isn’t a superstar steal late in the draft, but he does have backup potential in the NFL. The Steelers took Joshua Frazier at the end of the 2018 NFL Draft and without anymore pressing needs, they’ll do the same with Mack this offseason.
Mack has good size and decent quickness for a nose tackle. This season, he’s recorded 5.5 sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss. The league doesn’t have a pressing need for defensive tackles meaning Mack will drop to the end of the draft where Pittsburgh will be able to claim him.
This gives Daniel McCullers another year of competition. He’s certainly earned a contract somewhere. Whether that’s with the Steelers or not will be up to them. But if not, adding Mack as a backup nose tackle will certainly keep the talent level the same.
It’s not a bad way to finish off the draft, and with the defense being the focal point of the offseason, the Steelers would certainly like to bring in as much potential as possible. Mack will be one of the top players left on the board this late, making him an easy choice with their seventh-round pick.
