How does Deandre Baker fit the Pittsburgh Steelers?

The obvious answer to this question is simple: he plays corner. The Steelers keep finding themselves in the same continuous loop of needing a corner come draft time.

The team’s inability to hit on a corner back since drafting Keenan Lewis has been a source of frustration time and time again for a fan base becoming impatient with the lack of development abilities the team has with its secondaries.

That lack of development showed when Artie Burns seemingly pulled a 180-degree turn after a promising rookie year to now being on the verge of getting cut before his rookie contract even ends.

The Steelers could use a physical, press-man corner with good ball skills and it just so happens Deandre Baker fits that bill very well. Baker’s press man coverage skills fit what the Steelers need to do to get back to dominant defense.

Baker is already a willing and able tackler with the ability to provide adequate run support when necessary. The team needs this kind of physical presence across from Joe Haden in 2019 and beyond at corner.

Deandre Baker has the ability to step into a defense and make an impact right away and has the ability to do it outside or from the slot. His experience with multiple coverage techniques as well as his mental awareness and reaction skills will help him adapt quicker than most to the NFL game.
