2019 Steelers Draft Introspection: How we performed and what it could signal

Round 5:

Projected pick: Andrew Wingard S Wyoming

Actual Pick:       Zach Gentry TE Michigan

Like the Benny Snell pick, my son called the Zach Gentry pick.  Since we bypassed the TE I thought we would draft in the third round, we drafted Gentry in the fifth.  As I proclaimed earlier in the article, the safety position was overlooked in this draft, as far as I’m concerned.

Wingard signed as a UDFA with Jacksonville.  So what does Gentry potentially bring to the table?  I think the optimum word here is potential.  Because Michigan is my favorite college team (I was born and raised in Philly and graduated from Temple University, therefore, by default, they are my favorite team emeritus), I have watched a ton of Michigan games.

I think Gentry would offer Ben a “big body” target, especially in the “red zone”.  He has good hands, from what I saw of him.  My concern is his blocking aptitude. He’s going to have to avail himself of the team’s weight program and get stronger at the point of attack.  I think he makes the team, almost because there may not exist a whole lot of competition for the third TE spot.
