3 players the Steelers should put on the trade block
By Tommy Jaggi
3. Ryan Switzer, WR
This may not be a popular trade scenario, but let me explain why this would work in favor of the Steelers. Though Switzer is slowly becoming a fan favorite in Pittsburgh, they may be able to turn him into better compensation than the 5th round choice they bought him for.
The Steelers traded for Switzer just before the start of the 2018 NFL season. While he proved to be a solid return man and capable slot receiver, this trade makes sense.
Returning from injury is Eli Rogers. Rogers, has been a very capable slot receiver throughout his time in Pittsburgh. He has averaged 10.5 yards per catch throughout his career compared to Switzer’s 7.0.
The Steelers seem to love Eli Rogers, and he is still just 26 years old. With two players on the team that essentially provide the same thing for Pittsburgh, it would be wise to deal one of them for return – especially if the Steelers don’t think that both could make the roster.
Switzer is nearly two years younger, and offers value as a kick and punt returner. Fortunately, for the the Steelers, Rogers has punt return experience, and newcomer, Diontae Johnson, was a fantastic return man in college.
Instead of choosing between the two slot receivers or simply having one ride the bench, the Steelers have a chance to deal Switzer and receive perhaps a 4th round draft choice in return.
Though the likelihood of any of these trade scenarios coming to fruition isn’t great, they are trades that the Steelers should at least consider. It wouldn’t hurt to put Burns, Rudolph, or Switzer on the trade block, just to see what happens.
