Top 50 Pittsburgh Steelers of the 2000’s: players 50-41
By Tommy Jaggi
48. Matt Spaeth, TE (2007)
I’m not going to lie, there weren’t many tight ends out there that were more boring to watch than Matt Spaeth. The 2007 3rd round draft choice played second fiddle his entire career to Heath Miller and never earned more than 17 receptions or 136 receiving yards in a single season.
However, what Spaeth lacked in receiving aptitude, he made up for with his blocking ability. At 6’7” and nearly 270 pounds, Spaeth could drive defenders back and help pave the way for the Steelers rushing attack for 7 of his 9 years in the NFL.
Spaeth helped a number of running backs carve out 1,000 yard rushing seasons, including Willie Parker, Rashard Mendenhall, and of course, Le’Veon Bell. Though he played most of his career in the shadows of Heath Miller, Spaeth still played in 94 games for the Steelers and did the dirty work in the trenches. He deserves a shout out for his services in Pittsburgh.
