Top 6 Pittsburgh Steelers for fantasy football in 2019
By Dan Gilliam
Who is the Steelers players on your Fantasy Football radar? Until this year there was a few bona fide studs that every owner wanted to draft. Now the landscape of the offense has changed dramatically. Two of the three main stars have moved on to other teams but does that mean the cupboard is bare? No! There were two breakouts last year who could continue there studdom and maybe even reach elite status at their respective position! If another can stay healthy and on the field there might be another breakout player. So let’s talk about these players and rank the top six Steelers for Fantasy Football.
Top six Steelers for Fantasy Football
1) Juju Smith Schuster
Became a stud last season with 111 receptions, 1426 yards and seven TDs. There are a lot of analysts who believe he will reach elite top 5 numbers this year while being the number 1 WR in Pittsburgh. Believe the hype. He could outperform his draft position again this year.
2) James Conner
You can read my article about him here on FantasyCPR. He was another Steeler player that broke out last year. Came out of virtually nowhere to become one of the top backs in the NFL. Can he take that next step to greatness? We will see as the run game should be the driving force for the offense this year.
3) Vance McDonald
Vance McDonald had his best year as a pro last year and become a #1 Fantasy TE in the process. 50 catches with 610 yards receiving plus 4 TDS. He had one of the best and coolest stiff arms I have ever seen in my life that I will never forget. Can he continue this run and stay healthy (he has had a problem his entire career staying on the field)? If he can keep up this pace, he will be the Steelers unquestioned starter and maybe the second passing option?
4) Ben Roethlisberger
Why so low? Well his home vs road stats are terrible except last year were he actually had more fantasy points on the road for the first time since 2014. He averages almost 2 more TD passes at home. He is a good QB but I am not sure you can trust him overall. You would have to take a backup in a one quarterback league and that is a waste of a bench spot. I think you can roll with him but don’t forget his road problems and bench him during games away from Heinz Field.
5) Jaylen Samuels/Donte Moncrief/James Washington/Bennie Snell/Diontae Johnson
Who wins out of this matchup? These guys are late round flyers in my opinion. The rookie Snell could be the traditional backup to Conner and Samuels could be the passing down back. Then at WR, who takes that number 2 spot? Is it Moncrief or Washington? Neither have been overly impressive and Moncrief has down right disappointed in his career.
Then the rookie Johnson comes in with a very similar skillset to AB. Good route running and fast, ability to create separation. The Steelers seem to like playing rookie WRs. I don’t know if anyone is worth anything more than a dart thrown late in drafts unless in your Dynasty draft. Fantasy Football Calculator has Samuels ADP at 111, Moncrief at 151 and Washington at 126 overall so take that your pick.
6) Steelers Defense
I have them ranked last because I suggest to NOT draft DEF until the last or second to last round of your draft. I don’t think it gives you any advantage at all to draft a Defense any higher than that. The defensive unit could be sneaky good but don’t reach for them.
The NFL season and fantasy football draft season is fast approaching. It is time to start getting those draft boards ready. Do your research before your draft and do some mock draft to prepare yourself. The Steelers have some players that could potentially help win your league so don’t overlook them.
