Play 2: Acceleration

Another great feature we look for in Devin Bush is his speed and acceleration. In this play, Bush shows just how quick he is on a blitz.

There are so many things to point out here. First, he anticipates the snap by already beginning his attack before the ball is actually snapped. That gives him all the more advantage to everything that happens next.

He then gets around the linemen who have picked up their assignments and sees the running back coming to either fully pick him up or throw a chip block. If he was coming up to fully block Bush, he got worked badly. Bush’s quick outside-in move got the running back off balance, giving Bush a clear lane at Jameis Winston.

Then, the way Bush accelerates out of the move around the back into a full on sprint at Winston is highly impressive. Once Bush’s right foot hits the ground to plant, he takes off from 0-60 in no time at all. This just shows how much speed he has and, more impressively, how quickly he gets to that top speed.

Yes, they didn’t come away with the sack on the play, but Bush filled his gap perfectly. It was unfortunate timing between when and how Bush and Ola Adeniyi got there and Winston’s ability to scramble away from pressure.

This was by far my favorite play from Bush throughout the night. While the next play we look at had the largest impact in any play he was a part of, this play here shows so much of his ability and how he can put it all together in a matter of a couple of seconds.
