The Pittsburgh Steelers defended home field successfully this preseason, this time by defeating the Kansas City Chiefs by a score of 17-7. A few players stole the show Saturday night.

In the Steelers final preseason game at home, there were a lot of good things to take way from the game, as well as some ugly things. Some players we’ve needed to see step up did exactly that in this game. And yet, some others did not.

Overall, the defense looked very impressive. They played out of a base 3-4 defense most of the night. While they were mismatched on a few plays, they were very stout overall. They were physical at the line of scrimmage and played well in man coverage.

There were some mishaps (as there always are), but for a team that’s relied on zone coverage so often, it’s nice to see different players make good plays in man coverage. It also helps to weed out the players that don’t do so well.

One of the highlights of the night for the defense is holding the current NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes to a pedestrian 11 yards on two completions in five attempts.

The battle for the backup quarterback spot continued as Mason Rudolph had a solid performance after a shaky start. Rudolph completed only three of his seven passes in the first quarter, but went 7-for-8 in the second quarter, totaling for 77 total yards.

Dobbs was a bit more up and down. He had a couple nice throws, one in particular to Eli Rogers for 38 yards late in the first half, but threw a really bad interception at the goal line on the following play.

Both Diontaes on the roster made nice contributions as well. Diontae Spencer had a 38-yard punt return and 19-yard run on a reverse and Diontae Johnson hauled in an impressive touchdown grab.

Three Steelers in particular really made their presence known. And it starts with the defense.
