The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 17-7 at Heinz Field tonight. Here is a recap of each scoring drive from the game.

The Steelers won their second consecutive preseason game of 2019 – this time against the Kansas City Chiefs. Here is a quick recap of each score from tonight’s win:

  • The Steelers scored the first touchdown lead by a Mason Rudolph drive. It was a 14-yard touchdown run by Jaylen Samuels. This was a drive where Mason Rudolph came alive with the first team. Chris Boswell added the extra point.
  • The Chiefs responded with a touchdown drive led by Chad Henne. Mecole Hardman beat Mike Hilton in the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown pass.  Harrison Butker kicked the extra point to tie the game.
  • The Steelers took the lead in the fourth quarter with a 46-yard field goal kicked by Matthew Wright. The field position was gained by quarterback Josh Dobbs.
  • The Steelers put the icing on the cake with a touchdown by Diontae Johnson that was thrown by Devlin Hodges. It was reviewed because it looked like Diontae Johnson didn’t have the ball secured when it hit the ground, but the referees upheld the touchdown.

Notes:

The story of the game was turnovers. Both teams had many. There were plenty of fumbles -one that was recovered and another that was not. There was a sequence where the Chiefs fumbled and then Pittsburgh fumbled right afterward. Both teams were careless with the ball.

Bud Dupree got on the stat sheet early and often with 2 sacks, 2 tackles for a loss, a pass deflection, and 3 quarterback hits. He was getting pressure on the quarterback all night. It is nice to see production from him.

The Steelers blitzed often tonight, which is a surprise for a team playing in the preseason. This may signal a shift in philosophy which means the Steelers are going back to their old ways of blitzing often. I do want to caution that it is the preseason and it is hard to read exactly what the scheme will be for a team.
