What options do the Steelers have after Ben Roethlisberger retires?
Will Grier would make a quality starter if a trade is on the table
One unproven backup quarterback that has starting potential through my eyes is Will Grier. The rookie had a decorated collegiate career. Grier played for the Florida Gators for a short stint, and finished his career with the West Virginia Mountaineers.
He finished his career throwing for 8,556 yards while completing 81 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. Grier was a big reason West Virginia was relevant the past two years. I find the rookie was drafted into an odd situation. In the third round, the Carolina Panthers drafted Grier with the hope to back up Cam Newton who does have a long history of injuries.
Newton is still relatively young though, so the move still surprised me. After his first preseason appearance, he showed some flashes of what everyone saw while he was in college. With that being said, Grier showed that he has a lot of room for growth as well.
Just like in Nick Mullins case, Grier would be a low risk, high reward addition for the Steelers. Also, his trade value should not be too expensive either. If the Panthers wanted to add a quarterback who fits their offensive scheme more, the Pittsburgh Steelers could trade Josh Dobbs for Will Grier. The Panthers more than likely would not agree to the deal without a mid-round, or late-round pick attached.
Conclusion
If the Pittsburgh Steelers did decide to outsource for one of these three quarterbacks, I find that Mason Rudolph would only benefit from the acquisitions. Competition only pushes players to get better. Plus, you can never have too many competent quarterbacks on a roster.
I am not looking forward to the day Ben Roethlisberger retires, but that day is inevitable. Each and every one of these options could get the job done for Pittsburgh, so the team should evaluate all options once the longtime franchise quarterback Roethlisberger hangs his cleats up.
