The Steelers lost to the Panthers tonight 25-19. Here are my answers to my five burning questions.

The preseason has wrapped up for the Steelers and I think overall it has been a successful one. Sure, it would have been nice to win all four games, but a 3-1 record is good enough for me.

We saw the ball bounce the Panthers way this game especially on the interception that went off of Zach Gentry’s leg. However, the Panthers still outplayed the Steelers.

This is nothing to fret about though as the Steelers starters were not in the game. I think only Devin Bush played of all the starters.

Before we look ahead to the regular-season opener against the Patriots, I will answer the five burning questions from before the game.

Who will emerge as the third quarterback for the Steelers?

Mason Rudolph further cemented himself as the #2 quarterback tonight. He was the only quarterback who was moving the ball in my opinion. He has played the best of the three behind Ben Roethlisberger this preseason. He should be getting a helmet on gamedays at this point.

Josh Dobbs didn’t have a very good night. He was inconsistent with his accuracy and that is a problem that we have been seeing from him. He had a big miss on a throw in the first quarter and also almost fumbled a shotgun snap. He didn’t look like a third-year quarterback tonight.

Devlin Hodges didn’t have a good game either. He was hurt by terrible offensive line play and that made it really hard to do anything in the third quarter. I also saw him miss on a short pass which you can’t blame on the offensive line. He did settle down into the fourth quarter, but I don’t think it was enough.

I think it would be hard to trade Josh Dobbs at this point and I think the Steelers should try to roll with him as the third quarterback. He does have some upside and can always make a play with his legs. I think Devlin Hodges more lost the job tonight more than Dobbs won it, but I do sympathize with the small window that Hodges was given.
