Pittsburgh Steelers initial 53-man roster: Here’s who made the cut

All NFL teams were forced to cut their rosters down to just 53 players by 4:00 PM ET today. Here are the players the Steelers decided to keep.

There are a few moments all die-hard Steelers fans look forward to each year: The start of free agency, the NFL Draft, and the start of the season. But for some of us, cut day is as important as any.

Football fans all over the nation are glued to their phones to await the final decision of NFL front offices. There are a few players in particular that Steelers fans would be up in arms over had they not made the team.

The anticipation has been building since the start of the preseason, but that wait is finally over. The Steelers could elect to throw a few waiver claims in for some players who were recently cut from other teams. But as for now, here are the players on the Pittsburgh Steelers roster heading into the 2019 season:

There weren’t a lot of surprises to be had. Some fans were disappointed to see Sutton Smith, Eli Rogers, and Johnny Holton get cut. Here are the players who fell short of making the team (cuts announced from Pittsburgh Steelers):

Offensive cuts:

Quarterback Devlin Hodges, running backs Trey Edmunds, Travon McMillian and Malik Williams, receivers Trey Griffey, Johnny Holton, Tevin Jones, Brandon Reilly, Eli Rogers and Diontae Spencer, and tight ends Micky Crum, Kevin Rader, Christian Scotland-Williamson and Trevor Wood, offensive linemen Garrett Brumfield, Derwin Gray, J.C. Hassanauer, Patrick Morris and Damian Prince.

Defensive cuts:

Defensive backs Marcus Allen, Dravon Askew-Henry, Marcelis Branch, Jhvonte Dean, P.J. Locke and Trevon Mathis, linebackers Jayrone Elliott, Christian Kuntz, Tegray Scales, Sutton Smith and Robert Spillane, and defensive linemen Winston Craig, Greg Gilmore, Henry Mondeaux, Casey Sayles and Conor Sheehy.

Special teams cuts:

Kicker Matthew Wright, punter Ian Berryman.

Trades:

Steelers sent offensive lineman Jerald Hawkins and a 2021 7th round pick to Tampa Bay for a 2021 6th round pick.
