Three Steelers players who stood out in the loss to the Ravens
By Dan Gilliam
The Ravens and Steelers games are always hard-hitting, competitive and very close. The Ravens came to Pittsburgh with a 2-2 record and looking like a solid team. Today’s game, the Steelers desperately need a win to remain relevant in the AFC North. It did not work out, but here are the three players who stood out in the loss to the Ravens.
What a great game this was. There was a lot to unpack in this one, and I feel it may be discussed long after Sunday is over. That hit to Mason Rudolph was a hard one for all of Steelers nation to stomach as there will probably be fines and suspensions after a blow to his head.
If you did not see the game, Rudolph was sandwiched by two Ravens defenders and was knocked out on the field. The player in front hit him in the face mask, and Mason was out cold even before hitting the ground.
Here are the players that stood out in this brutal matchup.
Three players who stood out
Devlin Hodges
For the Steelers to stay in the game, Hodges had to manage the game and not make mistakes. He looked comfortable in the pocket and did not try to force the ball. He threw for 68 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.
Devlin Hodges entered the game when Rudolph went out in the 3rd Quarter. He directed two scoring drives and made a few plays.
On the subsequent drive following the injury, he made a 13-yard completion to Dioantae Johnson that kept the drive going that lead to a James Conner TD.
He also led another drive and scrambled for 21 yards. This led to a Chris Boswell FG that put the Steelers up 23-20.
Chris Boswell
The Steelers kicker had a very tumultuous season in 2018. He only made 65 percent of his kicks according to Pro Football Reference. A lot of fans (me included) were calling for a replacement. This year, however, he has turned in around. He is perfect through 5 games in field goal and extra-point attempts.
The Steelers needed every one of those points today. Boswell made three field goals and 2 extra points to help his team almost win in overtime. He did his job and was perfect for the day.
The Defense
For the second straight week, I think the entire Defensive unit stood out. The group kept the Steelers in the game and sacked the quarterback five times. There were multiple times the Ravens drove deep on the Steelers but were denied a touchdown. They had to settle for four field goals on the day.
The Ravens drove to the Steelers 27, 26, 30, and 28. The Steelers seemed to have a bend but don’t break defense that helped keep the score low, and this gave the offense a chance.
This was an unfortunate result, but the Defense seems to be coming around. The Steelers are down to their third-string quarterback, and unless he can clear the concussion protocol, then we will see more of Devlin Hodges. Having a 1-4 record, there will probably be another year without a playoff spot.
