The Pittsburgh Steelers might be just 1-4 on the season, but here’s why their record doesn’t tell the whole story in 2019.

It has been a disastrous start to the 2019 season for the Pittsburgh Steelers. After a six-game win streak in the middle of the 2018 season, Pittsburgh dropped 4 of their last 6 games and fell a half a game short of making the playoffs last season.

The Steelers are now just 1-4 on the season and have won just 3 games in their last 11 contests dating back to last season. Still, with all of this against them, Pittsburgh may be a better team than their embarrassing record indicates.

First of all, Pittsburgh hasn’t exactly had a cakewalk to start the season. Though they humiliated the Cincinnati Bengals, their other opponents so far consisted of the New England Patriots, Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers, and the Baltimore Ravens.

These teams have a combined for an astonishing record of 16-3 after more than a quarter of a season of play, which equates to perhaps the most difficult schedule in all of football through the first five weeks of the season.

Though Pittsburgh was blown out by the Patriots in Foxborough in week one, they have been close in every other contest they lost this year. In fact, the Steelers have lost their last three games by an average of just 3 points per contest.

These are all games that very easily could have gone in a different direction if it wasn’t for a few missed opportunities and a couple of bad calls.

While their offense isn’t anything to ride home about this year, there are some defensive statistics that would indicate the Steelers are a better team than what their record shows. Pittsburgh is currently tied for 1st in the league takeaways (12), 5th in turnover differential (+5), and 3rd in sacks (19), according to Team Rankings.

Despite all their success in these areas, they boast just one win on the sesaon.

I’m not going to sit here and convince you that the Steelers deserved to be a 4-1 team right now, or that they are one of the better teams in the league. They have a ton of question marks on offense that clearly need sorted out. However, Pittsburgh may be a better team than their pitiful 2019 record indicates.
