The Steelers can win if defensively…

I have said it multiple times throughout this season, but I will briefly mention it one more time: the defense must stop the run.

That will always be the key until this defense can consistently do so. Making any offense one dimensional is crucial to being able to do the top priority against a hall of fame quarterback like Philip Rivers: create lots of pressure.

Rivers isn’t quite as mobile as Wilson. Garoppolo, and Jackson–which makes the goal of collapsing the pocket a lot more critical. Before, they had to worry about letting those three not roll outside of the pocket for the threat of their athleticism taking over to create space in the run game.

Any quarterback facing pressure will look a little more human–look at Tom Brady last year in Heinz Field. They cannot let Rivers pick them apart while drinking a cup of coffee.

This is a very winnable battle as Rivers has been dropped 11 times so far this season. If a successful pass rush harasses Rivers, the turnovers will roll in.

Last season the Steelers only forced 15 turnovers. They’ve already eclipsed 80% of those with 12 this year.

Giving their young quarterback a short field to work with will be crucial. However, I do feel like the Steelers will have to do something on defense they haven’t done yet: score.

I get the sense the defense will have to score this week to give the Steelers an optimal chance at a win. At this point, whatever it takes to win is all that matters.
