Emerging defense:

For the first time in a long time, the Steelers actually have a defense that could scare some teams. It wasn’t pretty from the start, however. Pittsburgh opened the season surrendering 33 points to the Patriots.

The Steelers have really turned things around over the last three weeks. Against the Chargers, Ravens, and Bengals, they surrendered an average of just over 15 points per game. This number could have been even smaller if Pittsburgh didn’t allow Philip Rivers and company to make a push during garbage time last week.

Pittsburgh’s defense took a major blow after losing Stephon Tuitt – who was easily having the best year of his career. However, young players like Devin Bush and Minkah Fitzpatrick are really coming alive, and are taking this defense to new heights.

If they continue to progress at the rate they have been, the Steelers defense could do enough to overcome the woes of the offense this season.

One of these things by itself may not be enough for the Steelers to come back from a 2-4 start to the season. However, the combination of an easy second-half schedule, a weak division, and an emerging defense could be enough for Pittsburgh to redeem their season and make the playoffs this year.
