4 wide receiver options for Steelers if Donte Moncrief gets released
By James Kelly
A disastrous 2019 start for Donte Moncrief
Would losing Moncrief’s 2019 contributions as a receiver be offset by the Steelers securing a 3rd round comp pick in the 2020 draft?
Six games into the 2019 season, Moncrief has made 4 catches on 13 targets for a total of 18 yards and zero TDs. Ten of those targets, three of his receptions, and seven of those yards came in the season opener against the Patriots. In the same game, he suffered at least three bad drops, possibly four.
In the second game, Moncrief allowed a well-thrown, uncontested pass to clunk off his hands and into those of a Seahawk defender. It was his only target in that game as Tomlin benched him for the rest of it and made him inactive for the subsequent games against the 49ers’ and Ravens.
Against the Bengals, Moncrief logged three snaps but no targets. Against the Chargers, he had one catch on two targets for eleven yards.
Considering that Moncrief’s most telling contribution to the Steelers 2019 season has been deflecting a pass into a defender’s arms in an eventual two-point loss, it can be reasonably said that gaining a 3rd round comp pick in return for releasing Moncrief could definitely be in the team’s best interest.
What are the team’s options for replacing him?
