3. Defensive front seven

The Steelers defense has carried them through the season. It feels great to be able to type that in a sentence after the last few years of lackluster defense with an explosive offense carrying the team.

Although Le’Veon Bell hasn’t had a great season, the Steelers, of all teams, know what he is capable of as a player. The Jets don’t quite use him the way most think he should be used but the Steelers will need to contain him nonetheless.

Bell is a special player and the defense should know this after practicing against him for years and watching his talents on the sidelines when he was a Steeler. They will need to ignore his numbers heading into this game and commit to containing him.

If the defense can smother Bell and the Jets offense, the Steelers offense won’t have to be the greatest show on turf to win the game. They will just need to take care of the ball and finish their drives with points.

The Steelers have ridden their defense all season. It is time the offense stepped up to the plate and helped them out a bit.

If the Steelers can win this game, they just have to beat Baltimore in week 17 or the Titans must lose against the Texans in week 17 for Pittsburgh to get the sixth seed.

The focus will be on the Jets this week and taking care of business. If these X-factors can get the job done, the Steelers will be one step closer to playing past week 17 after missing the postseason last year.
