Draft a Wide Receiver
The Black & Gold like to draft a wide receiver on Day Two and that might be more important this year than in the past. The Steelers don’t have a first-round pick but got a long-term option at free safety in return. They will still have a second-round pick and a third-round compensatory pick.
I would say their biggest draft needs at this point in the offseason are nose tackle, outside linebacker and wide receiver. I’ve already said the importance of keeping Bud Dupree. I also think you can get a run-stopping nose tackle to play in their base defense for relatively cheap in the free-agent market.
I would like the first pick to be a wide receiver because that was a position of weakness in 2019. Juju Smith-Schuster had a disappointing year. Diontae Johnson is still young and having ball security issues and James Washington has been mediocre. They also don’t have much receiving talent after that as the bottom are more special teams players.
The good news is this is a very good wide receiver class. One guy I could see the Steelers targeting is Justin Jefferson from LSU. You can watch him in the National Championship against Clemson. He has been Joe Burrow’s main target.
Some things to like about Justin Jefferson is he is a good route runner, can line up in all three receiver positions and can high point the ball. I think the only reason he could be available to the Steelers in the second round is that there is so much other top-end receiver talent in this draft.
