Sign an inside linebacker

Drafting a linebacker is always an option. However, the Steelers don’t have a first-round pick to draft a day-one difference-maker. Even if Pittsburgh takes one in the second round there is no guarantee they will be able to contribute right away.

Vince Williams still has two years remaining on his deal, and the Steelers would take a massive cap hit if they tried to get out of his contract early. However, Mark Barron is currently the 9th-highest-paid player on the Steelers and is almost certain to be cut this offseason, as Pittsburgh could save $5.25 million by letting him go.

Though Pittsburgh doesn’t have a lot of money to work with, several big-name linebackers could help take this defense to a whole new level. Among the most notable unrestricted free agents are Joe Schobert, Cory Littleton, Blake Martinez, Jamie Collins, Reggie Ragland, Mychal Kendricks, and Danny Trevathan.

While a few of these players might be outside of their price range, the Steelers may be able to find a linebacker that could come in and be an impact player alongside Devin Bush in the middle of Pittsburgh’s defense.

With a closing Super Bowl window, it’s important that the Steelers try to do everything in their power to make a strong playoff run next season. Making these three moves could give them a good shot in the final years of Ben Roethlisberger.
