Round 7: Lavert Hill

Cornerback, Michigan

I was stunned to see that Pittsburgh met with twice as many defensive backs (four) as any other positional group at the NFL Combine. Their group of cornerbacks were top-notch in 2019, while Minkah Fitzpatrick was arguably the best free safety in the NFL last season.

Still, you don’t use one-third of your combine visits on secondary players unless you intend to draft one. I have the Steelers rounding out the draft by selecting Michigan cornerback, Lavert Hill.

At 5’10” with 30 7/8” arms, Hill isn’t built to play on the outside in the NFL. He also lacks plus deep speed required for the position. However, Hill is a crappy corner with quick feet. He projects purely as a nickel corner against slot receivers at the next level.

Mike Hilton may have just one year left in Pittsburgh, and the Steelers could bring in Hill to compete for his position after this season. However, 2019 third-round pick, Justin Layne, didn’t even play a defensive snap as a rookie, so Hill isn’t guaranteed to make the team.

The Steelers could also look for a running back during the 2020 draft, but there are just a few players who fit the profile of what they look for. Based on what we learned from the Combine, however, I think these are all very reasonable selections Pittsburgh could pursue this April.
