Steelers draft watch: Prospects Pittsburgh could target after the Combine
The 2020 NFL combine has just past, here are the prospects that might be available when the Steelers are on the clock.
The combine came and went in another year full of talented prospects, but this year was different for Steelers fans.
Going into the 2020 NFL draft the Steelers have to wait until pick 49 (second round) to make their first selection. Prospects went through the drills and scouts and representatives from all 32 teams watched as players tried to put on a show.
EDGE Josh Uche, Michigan
Uche is coming out of Michigan with his break out year. With Bud Dupree being an unknown at this point, the Steelers will need to find a replacement for him. Even if the franchise tag is applied to Dupree, grooming his replacement might still be needed for the following season.
The man coming out of Michigan finished his last collegiate career with 8.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 fumble recovery. Uche seems like he is game for the opportunity of joining the Steelers. Only time will tell if the Steelers feel the same way.
EDGE, Zack Baun, Wisconsin
Baun did not perform at the combine like most thought he would. He has been moving up on draft boards during the pre-draft process up to this point. With poor performance in Indianapolis, he could drop to the Steelers.
Baun comes out of Wisconsin with a huge year that totaled 12.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 interception. Baun might not have done great in drills, but that does not show everything about the kind of player that he really is. If he is still available at 49 then he will be hard for the Steelers to pass Baun up.
Tight End, Albert Okwuegbunam, Missouri
Ok, we will call him Albert because good luck with that last name. Coming into the combine, he was a late-round option for many teams when it comes to this position. That is still the case as he had a ton of different issues when it comes to his play and durability throughout a season.
He showed up big time at the combine with his amazing 40 time at 4.49 seconds. He ran faster than some of the receivers in this class. For a late to mid-round option, Albert would be a good pickup with tons of potential.
This past season he had 6 touchdowns and 306 yards receiving. That was less than his previous season which saw him total 466 yards. Albert should not be the team’s top option when it comes draft time, but he would be a good fallback pick.
