The Steelers need to re-sign a versatile backup offensive lineman

In 2015, the Steelers signed an undrafted, free-agent offensive lineman out of Kansas State who has blossomed into not only a quality backup but has started 13 games over four seasons. Undrafted, free-agent offensive lineman do not typically become viable starters, but that is exactly what B.J. Finney has accomplished during his career.

If you look at the starters on the offensive line for 2019, three of the five starters were former undrafted, free agents.  Finney has all of the attributes necessary to become a full-time starter, which is what some other teams may be thinking if he hits the free-agent market.

The fact that Finney has starting experience at both guard and center makes it all the more imperative that we do what we have to do to re-sign him.  Obviously, I am speculating here but the fact that Finney originally signed with us could help sway his decision to re-sign with us.  Of course, that decision may hinge on what type of contract we would be able to offer him.

Quality depth at every position is something that every team strives to achieve. The Steelers signed an offensive lineman in 2015 and are now in a position where we could either provide another team with a starter or provide us with quality depth and/or a starter if the Steelers can re-sign him.

Let’s take a look at why the Steelers need to re-sign Nick Vannett.
