Why looking for red flags will help Steelers avoid mistakes of the past

Red flags:
- Incredibly undersized
- Below average athlete
Senquez Golson didn’t have a laundry list of red flags prior to being drafted by the Steelers. However, the one that he did have were very concerning. While production was clearly not an issue (10 interceptions in the SEC as a senior), his size was more than concerning.
NFL teams typically require players to meet certain thresholds for a reason. Though Golson was a great player in college, we could assume that it wouldn’t translate the same way in the NFL. At 5’9” and 176 pounds, Golson would clearly be limited to playing only the slot at the next level. To be that small as a second-round draft choice, he didn’t have crazy athleticism to make up for his lack of size. He tested as just a 33 percentile athlete, according to 3 Sigma Athlete.
Golson Though he wasn’t injury prone in college, Golson was banged up throughout training camp. As a result, he never played a game for the Steelers.
