The Steelers may need to or may want to look at signing outside free agents

In less than two weeks, the NFL free agency period will begin.  As is seemingly always the case, the Steelers will not have an abundance of cap space with which to either sign our own free agents or to sign free agents from other teams. While it is preferable that we re-sign our own, the reality is that the Steelers will simply not have enough cap space to pull that off.

Hopefully, the Steelers will be able to free up the required cap space to retain our own free agents and will not be forced to look to the outside for help, but that is not generally how free agency unfolds.  It is more likely that the Steelers will have to sign free agents from other teams to compete for either starting or back-up jobs.

The pending free agents we discussed, Mariota, Bucannon, and Billings, represent the type of free agents the Steelers typically sign.  These players may actually be able to infuse some ‘new blood’ into the team.  Perhaps all three players may be Steelers in 2020.  If they do become Steelers, my only hope is that they contribute to our success and are not the causes of our demise.
