5th round pick, 166th overall

James Proche, WR, SMU

The Steelers could go one of two ways at WR this offseason: they could target a Martavis Bryant type of height-weight-speed guys or go after an over the middle slot option. While having a true deep threat is appealing, James Washington had a healthy year in that role last year, averaging 16.7 yards per reception. The Steelers don’t have a guy that can attack the middle of the field though.

That’s where James Proche comes in. He was a slot WR most of the time at SMU and is very physical over the middle of the field. He isn’t an athletic wonder, but he’ll make the tough catch and move the chains. He’ll be the backup slot WR his rookie year but would likely be the “next man up” in case of injury.
