Should the Steelers consider Jordan Love if he slips in the draft?

Jordan Love’s perspective on the 2019 season

Jordan Love did not hold back on his 17 interceptions thrown during the 2019 season. Love commented that each interception is a learning moment while being interviewed at the NFL combine. The quarterback prospect also goes on to say during interviews he relied on his arm to heavily during his last college football season.

Taking ownership of not only the positives, but the negative things that took place at Utah State show what kind of leader Love really is. This is a trait the Pittsburgh Steelers no doubtingly should have taken notice of.

Is Jordan Love a first-round prospect

Jordan Love has the build of an NFL ready quarterback. Love stands at 6’4″, while his hands were measured at 10 1/2″. The future NFL starter also showed he is more athletic, and agile than his statistics show. When looking at quarterbacks of the past who have participated in the NFL combine, I find Love’s numbers and play are both similar to current Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. Each of their combine grades is shown in the table below.

Combine Measurements 40-yard dash Vertical jump Broad jump 3-cone drill Overall Grade
Dak Prescott 4.79 32.5″ 116″ 7.11 5.9
Jordan Love 4.74 35.5″ 118″ 7.21 6.35

Jordan Love had a better combine grade at nearly all activities than Dak Prescott. However, after looking at Prescott’s college numbers, he had a better overall college career while playing at Mississippi State University. During Prescott’s final two seasons in college, he threw a combined total of 16 interceptions. One less than Love thew during his final season in college.

Dak Prescott’s College stats Passing yards TD: INT Completion % QB rating
Junior year 3449 27:11 61.60% 151.7
Senior year 3793 29:5 66.20% 151

With all of this information, I find it interesting Dak Prescott was selected in the fourth round in the 2016 draft: while Jordan Love is anticipated to be selected between the first to the second round in the upcoming 2020 NFL draft. It is clear through my eyes Prescott was a better prospect than Love is currently. This is explicit due to Dak’s statistical consistency, ability to minimize turnovers, and this is without his impressive rushing numbers in mind.
