4th round: Jonathan Garvin

Edge defender, Miami

Jonathan Garvin is an edge defender with intriguing measurables. At 6’4” and 263 pounds with 34” arms, Garvin has a prototype frame for the edge position. He tested well too. Though his 4.82-second 40-yard dash at the Combine is nothing to write home about, he tested at or above the 90th percentile in both his vertical jump and broad jump.

Garvin’s production was a little underwhelming as a junior this season (37 tackles, 9.0 tackles for a loss, 5.0 sacks in 12 games), but as a junior, he lit up the stat sheet. In 2018, Garvin earned 60 tackles, 17.0 tackles for a loss and 5.5 sacks.

Garvin is still a work in progress who needs some fine-tuning. Fortunately, the Steelers have time. Bud Dupree is playing under the franchise tag this season, but his future beyond 2020 is uncertain. Garvin could compete for snaps as a rookie and try to earn a starting job if Dupree doesn’t return in 2021.
