QB Jalen Hurts

I know there are a lot of different opinions on Jalen Hurts out there and I respect that, but this one really bothers me. The Steelers have perhaps the worst backup quarterback situation in the league, and Ben Roethlisberger is a 38-year-old quarterback coming off a major elbow injury.

Hurts is a supreme athlete for the position who was uber-productive in college. As a senior at Oklahoma, he threw for over 3,800 yards on a thoroughly impressive 11.3 yards per pass attempt. In addition, he managed a whopping 53 total touchdowns to just 8 interceptions.

There are questions about Hurts’ processing speed from the pocket, and I understand that. But having the chance to draft a quarterback with the upside to be a franchise signal-caller in rounds two or three is hard to pass up.

Regardless, the Steelers sent nobody to Oklahoma’s Pro Day. While that doesn’t mean they won’t draft anyone from Oklahoma, they pay far more attention to detail when drafting quarterbacks. At some point in the draft, Hurts will become too good of value to pass up, but the Steelers are “comfortable” with their quarterback situation, and he doesn’t fit the mold of what they look for.
