It’s over for former Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown

Former Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown’s career ended Friday when felony charges were levied against him in Florida. He will not be eligible to play for any NFL franchise for the foreseeable future.

It’s over, Steelers fans. Same for you, Ravens fans and NFL fans in general. Get used to it. Antonio Brown’s career has finally reached its sad and almost inexplicable finale. Sure, the once-great wide receiver may land a deal someday far down the road that places him on an NFL field again, but simple mathematics shows the hard truth.

On Friday, April 3, 2020, Brown was charged with felony burglary conveyance (whatever that means) and a couple of misdemeanors concerning battery and “mischief.” I’m sure his legal counsel will do everything necessary to keep the former Steelers wideout from lengthy jail time. That’s not the issue.

I know your question already. What, then, is the issue? Here’s where objectivity enters the picture. Let’s set aside for a moment the fact that AB is, for all intents and purposes, a pretty terrible human being. His shortcomings have been chronicled extensively and a quick google will show anyone what they need to know about the dude. Let’s also set aside the excuse so many have offered concerning the player he is on the field. “His work ethic is legendary,” some might say. Sure. Just like any professional athlete that thrives at their craft. He works hard. Whatever. We heard the same thing about Tim Tebow for years but at the end of the day, fans forget that everyone in the NFL works hard on their craft. Everyone.

So, for just a moment, let’s be objective and look at this entirely through the perspective of the business that is the NFL. Let’s understand what AB faces now that charges have been brought and what it means for his career.
