Steelers Mock Draft: Pittsburgh finds Javon Hargrave’s replacement at pick 49
By Tommy Jaggi
4th Round (from Miami): John Simpson
Interior offensive line, Clemson
If the Steelers want to eventually replace Ramon Foster with a clone of his younger self, they need to look no further than Clemson offensive guard, John Simpson. Simpson is has the size and strength Pittsburgh covets at the left guard position (6’4”, 321 pounds), but is even a better athlete than they normally require for that spot.
Simpson was part of a stellar Clemson offensive line that helped protect Trevor Lawrence the past two seasons. Simpson is a powerful blocker who can anchor in pass sets, but he struggles out in open space. Still, his ability as a pass protector should intrigue the Steelers.
With Stefen Wisniewski signed and a potential positional change for Matt Feiler, John Simpson could sit for a year before competing for a starting job in 2021. He’s a player that could be on their radar if he’s still there in the fourth round.
