4th Round: Alton Robinson

Edge defender, Syracuse

Edge defender Alton Robinson played with his hand in the dirt at Syracuse, but he’s an interesting prospect to make the switch to Pittsburgh’s 3-4 defense. Anymore, the scheme doesn’t mean as much as it used to, as the Steelers and other 3-4 teams are running more and more 4-man fronts.

Robinson is an intriguing athletic specimen that has a profile that compares favorably to Bud Dupree. Robinson measured in at 6’4” and 263 pounds at the NFL Combine. Though his arm length (32 3/8”) is in just the 9th percentile for NFL edge defenders, they are still about the same length as Bud Dupree’s (32 5/8”).

Robinson was a terrific tester with a 4.69 40-yard dash, 35.5” vertical, 119” broad jump, and 4.32 20-yard shuttle. His best season came as a sophomore where he recorded 17.0 tackles for a loss and 10.0 sacks. The Steelers wouldn’t be forced to use Robinson on defense right away, but if he shows promise, Pittsburgh could be more apt to let Dupree leave after the 2020 season.
