Three previous QB injuries that could project Steelers Roethlisberger’s future
Peyton Manning: Neck injury 2010-2011
Of these three injuries, this is the most comparable age-wise.
Peyton Manning saw his legendary Colts career ultimately ended with a neck surgery after the 2010 season. Folks forget that there was serious speculation if this was the end. No one saw Manning throw for nearly two years after the 2010 wildcard loss to the Jets.
With the drafting of Andrew Luck, the Colts cut ties with Manning who went to sign with the Broncos. There were still many questions whether the 36-year-old quarterback could return to form.
In 2012, he looked every bit of the old Peyton Manning we had seen before as he guided the Broncos to the first seed in the AFC playoffs. The following year, he broke multiple passing records and team scoring records en route to a Super Bowl berth.
Towards the end of 2014, we saw a slight drop off that didn’t become evident until the 2015 season. Despite hoisting a Lombardi that season, Manning’s physical ability had deteriorated as he rode off into the sunset.
Though this was not an elbow injury, it was just as–if not more–serious as Roethlisberger’s elbow injury. Both of these QB’s are tough, gritty, and future Hall of Famers that could very well both have overcome their injuries to produce a couple more solid seasons.
The conclusion? This injury rehabilitation for Roethlisberger will more than likely extend his career by one or two years. How effective he will be will literally be hit or miss.
He could either be able to sling the ball like Manning and Palmer and be effective; or digress as Delhomme did after the first year back.
